We were lucky enough to get some tickets and invite six of our friends. After being involved with so many events such as this one, I was impressed with the layout of the festival. Located in the middle of the ever so stunning Village of Merrick Park, surrounded by gorgeous retail stores, and impeccable landscaping.
The first VIP hour was very nice as it was not crowded so it gave me a chance to scope out all the wine and food. Met some old colleagues in the wine industry which was nice to catch up with. At events such as this I usually walk around checking out all the different labels then decide what I would like to try. For me it’s about sampling various wines and vintages. It is not a drunk fest, well for some it is.
I started with Palmes d’Or Brut Vintage, and what a great way to start. It had a complex nose with violets, cherry, and a smooth buttery finish. Bubbly goodness! My rating ***
I tasted so many wines over the four-hour period. Some highlights were:
Schug 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, good value, medium bodied with red fruits, soft tannins, very easy to drink. My rating **
2008 Brandborg Pinot Noir, luscious strawberries, mushrooms, earthy with sweet oak. Nice soft Pinot Noir that is enjoyable especially in hot temps. Great value from Oregon. My rating **
2007 Masi Costasera Amarone Classico, from the Provenance Veneto, Italy this wine has been a favorite for many years. Excellent structure with layers upon layers of flowers, fruit, berries, hints of spice, full-bodied with a touch of coffee. Great Amarone that is enjoyable because of the quality vintage after vintage. My rating ***
Fun evening with some great friends, and great wines! Donations for this event went to United Way. 🙂
